Tough Times For Paffett At The Norisring
Posted 28th June 2016
Gary Paffett had a difficult weekend as he took to the Norisring in Germany for the 7th and 8th races of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters 2016 season.
Driving the #2 Euronics Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM car for the Mercedes-AMG DTM Team ART, Paffett unfortunately found a series of issues hampered his attempts to make it through the field to the front of the pack during Saturday's race, leaving him in P15 at the race's end.
Reflecting on the race, Paffett said: "This has been a pretty tough weekend so far. We had some problems in practice and were unable to set up the car as we would have liked, and that resulted in a poor grid position. It's always tricky here, starting in the middle of the field. You get stuck in a train of vehicles, and it's very difficult to continue to move forwards. I had one or two good scraps but couldn't push forwards. Hopefully, things will be better tomorrow."
Sunday's race was set for success as despite having to work his way through the field, the car's performance was good and things looked positive for 35 year old Paffett. However, with less than 20 minutes to go, an issue affecting power hampered his chances of success, forcing Gary and the #2 car to retire early.
Paffett commented: "Very disappointing. I started from quite far back on the grid and made a strong charge through the field. The car was very fast, and we had a good strategy. We were in with a chance of points. After the pit stop, I was coming out of Turn 3 when I noticed a loss of power. Although it improved, I was so far back that we decided not to risk the engine. Now we need to find out what the problem was."
The results from the weekend leave Paffett 16th in the drivers' standings with 22 points.
Zandvoort, Netherlands plays host to the next two races of the DTM series from 15th July to 17th July.
