Points for Paffett at the Nurburgring

Posted 12th September 2016

Gary Paffett ended a frustrating weekend at the Nürburgring in the points positions after a P7 finish in the 14th round of the 2016 DTM season. The Nürburgring was celebrating its DTM Golden Jubilee as it hosted it’s 50th DTM race weekend, however any celebrations for Gary Paffett this weekend were much more low-key as weight penalties and on-track collisions put paid to his hopes of a podium finish.

Gary started Saturday’s race from P14 behind teammate Robert Wickens with realistic hopes of making his way into the points positions. These hopes were heightened after a good start but a collision in Turn 4 with Timo Scheider (which resulted in a penalty for Scheider), forced Paffett off the track.

Following the incident, Paffett was left to try and make the most of his race toward the back of the grid eventually bringing the Euronics Mercedes-AMG C 63 car home in P19.

In spite of the incident, Paffett felt that he and his team and showed that they were deserving of a much better result.

"I started from P14 directly behind Robert, so my goal was clear, to follow him and maybe grab a few points in the process. Timo Scheider was behind Robert, mid-way through the race, trying to overtake. He lost a bit of speed in Turn 2 and I went past him on the inside at Turn 3. He then just ran me off the track in Turn 4. He got a penalty for his actions. I would have had a chance of points but for the incident. However, there weren't any as things turned out."

Sunday’s race brought more success for Gary even though he was still left to rue how matters beyond his control cost him and his team a few places on the grid.

A respectable P11 finish in qualifying meant that Gary started the race well-placed to make an assault on the points positions despite the extra performance weights placed upon the car.

An excellent start to the race saw Gary immediately gain a couple of positions. As things transpired, Gary’s impressive performance looked set to lead towards a charge toward the podium positions until an on-course spin in a battle with Jamie Green cost him a few places.

Following the spin, Gary enjoyed a competitive battle with fellow MB Partners’ driver Tom Blomqvist as they jostled for seventh position. Eventually, the experienced Paffett came out on top as he came home in P7.

Following the race, Gary was pleased with a good result whilst still left thinking about what might have been.

"Today was a better day than yesterday. Qualifying went okay. P11 wasn't too bad in view of the extra performance weights. I made an excellent start in the race and gained a couple of positions. It went really well for me after that, and I was on target to take P4 or 5. But then, Jamie Green came out of the pits and attacked me from way back down the field, unfortunately. He made me spin and that cost me two or three places. P7 is a good result in the circumstances, but more was possible."

Following this weekend’s events at the Nürburgring, Gary remains in tenth position in the Drivers’ Championship and will be hoping to record more point-scoring finishes when the DTM travels to Budapest in a fortnight’s time.
